Dr. Simmons is from Tamworth, Staffordshire, UK and joined the Marston laboratory in September 2016 as a postdoctoral research associate. He graduated with a MSci in Mathematical Sciences from the University of Birmingham, UK in 2010 and went on to earn his PhD in Applied Mathematics from the same institution in 2015 under the supervision of Professor Yulii Shikhmurzaev and Dr. James Sprittles.

Dr. Simmons' research work was focused on a collaborative project titled ‘Needle-free injection hydrodynamics’ funded by Inovio Pharmaceuticals. The project involved using high-speed imaging to support Inovio in the development of their Bioject ID pen, aimed to deliver DNA-based formulation into the epidermis by means of high-speed liquid jet and a detailed study into the flow dynamics associated with the ID pen by characterizing the rheological properties of the DNA solutions and then assessing their behavior during the various stages of the injection process.
